Alet Gardner

Hi there! I am an South African expat, living in the lovely Kent countryside in the UK.
I love everything meaningful and beautiful - so I try my hand at photography, painting, embroidery, needlework, cooking and writing.

My inspiration for all of this: the people that I love,
and the love that God has for me.

Kintsukuroi - the wonder of healing

Kintsugi (金継ぎ?, きんつぎ, "golden joinery"), also known as Kintsukuroi (金繕い?, きんつくろい, "golden repair"),[1] is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with lacquer dusted or mixed with powdered goldsilver, or platinum, a method similar to the maki-e technique.[2][3][4] As a philosophy, it treats breakage and repair as part of the history of an object, rather than something to disguise - Wikipedia

Apparently this art form became so popular with collectors that some were suspected of purposefully breaking their precious porcelain or pottery to be repaired by kintsukuroi!

Oefenlopie in Windhoek

A labour of love

Our beautiful, talented youngest daughter’s wedding took place in August 2015.

The challenge that had come my way was to be creative and come up with a stunning ring cushion.

Exercise and fitness

I often find that I work really hard to look good outwardly – working out at the gym regularly, dressing properly in order to make a good impression. But I so easily forget that God isn’t blinded by my manners or impressed by my correct conversations because He knows that the not so healthy thoughts that I foster in my heart WILL some or other time pop out of my mouth, or even explode into inexplicable actions.

I have had enough of praying!

Every morning, the last touch on my newly-made bed is the two handfuls of ornamental hearts that remind me to pray for my children and grandchildren – that God would keep them safe and that their lives would glorify his Name, whether in their relationships, their work or play.

On the receiving end…

When I go through life tagging along my emotional baggage neatly stuffed into a hip “trolley suitcase”, I will find it very hard to trust God.

Green risotto

When baking, one should follow the recipe to the T – and I do that. But, when making risotto, I tend to hop along happily, improvising, tasting, adapting and … enjoying.

So, here is my secret recipe:
