Hi there! I am a South African expat, now happily
settled in the lovely Kent countryside in the UK.

I love everything meaningful and beautiful,
which I try to capture in different media.

My inspiration for all of this: the people that I love,
and the love that God has for me.

Ek deel graag met jou die vreugdes van dit
wat mooi en betekenisvol is.

Writing

Creating pictures with words & building it into stories

Blog

Here I like to share the impressions & discoveries encountered on my journey through life.

Articles

Sharing words of wisdom (not always my own) with you, covering a variety of subjects.

Books

Do have a look at the three books I have written.

Arts and Crafts

Creating with lines, shapes, colours & textures

Sketchbook

A pencil and sketchbook in hand I’m happy – whether walking around my favourite art gallery or simply sitting down for a coffee.

Painting

I work mainly in water colours but am ready to embark on an adventure with oils and multimedia.

Embroidery

Being creative with stitching is one of the joys in my life – from embellishing a facecloth to creating a ring cushion for my daughter’s wedding.

Series 13

… started off with an apron with a message and branched out to other joyful creations.

Cooking

This is about imagining, preparing, serving & enjoying food can always be a feast.

Elsa Schiaparelli once said: A good cook is like a sorceress who dispenses happiness.

Knife Skills

Knife Skills

Mastering basic knife skills is one of the most essential parts of cooking, along with keeping your knives sharp. A sharp knife not only allows you to work faster, but safer. When your knife is blunt the amount of pressure needed to cut through food is much greater, one slip can result in a nasty injury. See www.greatbritishchefs.com

Honouring God by taking care of myself

Honouring God by taking care of myself

Robert Murray McCheyne, 19th century minister in the Church of Scotland, was known for his dedication to home visits and evangelism. Even after retiring at the age of 25 due to poor health, he still focused on the ministry up to his death shortly before his 30th birthday. Towards the end of his life he lamented: “God gave me a message to deliver and a horse to ride. Alas, I have killed the horse and now I cannot deliver the message.”

While it might be admirable living a shorter but meaningful life rather than a long, fruitless life, most of us find ourselves between these two extremes. We have a responsibility, though, to see this “horse” of ours as part of the equipment God entrusts to us while in his service.

Rebecca’s Apron

Rebecca’s Apron

Rebecca’s apron is one of my favourites. Not just the lovely fabric that I used but what it is a symbol of in the life of a very special lady. All of my aprons remind us to follow the example of Jesus lovingly serving others while we are part of our heavenly Father’s...

Courage

Courage

In the UK and beyond Bear Grylls is the personification of adventure, survival and courage – truly a brave man. Just as brave is a husband who goes to comfort his estranged wife after her lover had left her.
The world’s way to “cut off that person” and “I am entitled to happiness, so I am filing for a divorce” sounds so simple that I so easily forget that Paul had warned us that our battle is not against flesh and blood. Our battle is a spiritual one – against the enemy who aims to destroy especially Christian marriages. This changes my perception to the extent that I can follow Nehemiah’s advice: “Don’t be afraid of the enemy! Remember the Lord, who is great and glorious, and fight for your brothers, your sons, your daughters, your wives, and your homes!” (Nehemiah 4:14b New Living Translation)

Light on the facets of my life

Light on the facets of my life

Among our extended family you would find a few skilled photographers. So, on family holidays, the less skilled pick up that light is an important factor and soon start referring jokingly to perfect natural light: “The light! The light!” Perfect supernatural light...

Embroidered fun

Embroidered fun

When redoing my website, I was challenged by Dean, my son-in-law and enabler, to rather embroider the letters than make do with whatever font that was available. Of course, it had to be legible but it also had to showcase my love for embroidery. It felt a bit awkward...

Flavoursome relationships

Flavoursome relationships

During the Easter holidays our family of foodies had a most enjoyable time baking, cooking, and enjoying the results around the dinner table. Whilst my son-in-law tried his hand at baking bread, we chatted away about the wonder of a teaspoonful of yeast...

Red toenails – a perspective

Red toenails – a perspective

Living abroad, we are from time to time kept in the loop about a friend or family member’s terminal illness via WhatsApp messages. One of the precious messages I received was a picture of the beautiful red toenails of a dear friend in her hospital bed. The...

Crisis management – a new way

Crisis management – a new way

Like many a South African male, my husband dreamt about having a farm: to be near nature, to be busy with farm animals. What joy when he and a friend were able to buy a piece of farm land, wíth cattle! What glorious activity to herd the cattle into a crush...
